What is Jiu-Jitsu?

At its core, Jiu-Jitsu (specifically Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ) is often described as "human chess." It is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. The central philosophy is empowering: it's designed so that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a larger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and weight distribution.

Jiu-Jitsu relies on the physics of the human body. By using limbs as levers, practitioners can apply significant force to an opponent's joints or neck with minimal effort. Statistically, a huge percentage of physical altercations end up on the ground. Jiu-Jitsu embraces this. Practitioners learn to:

  • Control an opponent's movement.

  • Neutralize threats from a defensive position.

  • Submit an opponent through joint locks (like armbars) or chokeholds.

Students will learn focus, discipline, and confidence they will take with them for the rest of their lives.

Being a competitive gym with a fully competitive Fight Team, we are strong believers in our members participating in Jiu-Jitsu competitions. In the world of Jiu-Jitsu, competition is often called the "accelerant." It is a high-pressure environment where you find out exactly what works and what doesn't.

Competing is not mandatory, but encouraged.

All skill levels are welcome.

We offer both Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu classes, please see our schedule to learn more about which gear is required for which class days and times. All Gi & Rashguard colors are welcome.

We are a Defcon Jiu Jitsu Affiliate through Ultimate Brothers Jiu Jitsu. Defcon Jiu Jitsu is an oustanding affiliate of several renowned BJJ lineages.
